Production of Stecklings
The basic seed is sown in August on highly specialized farms with a density of around 1.0 to 1.2 million seed per ha (10-12 units).
The small beets (stecklings) remain in the field in France and Italy during wintertime for vernalization. To protect them against strong frost in winter, these fields are covered with fleece during that period to make sure, that a sufficient number of stecklings with the necessary quality is available for seed production.†
In February, they are harvested with a weight of around 40-80 g and distributed upon the farms for seed production. An average of 1 ha of stecklings usually serves for 10 ha of seed production area. This is the time when KWS once again adjusts the production planning in order to meet the market demand based on the latest results of the different varieties.
